I’m not saying Funny Vacay Mode Teacheroffduty Shirt students shouldn’t show up for fear of reprimand (cutting classes is always going to be worse unless they aren’t required) but a mild mention that lets them know it’s noticed and can be disruptive is absolutely not “too harsh”. If you haven’t learned to handle having your name mentioned by a teacher than you should probably talk to that professor and let them know you have social anxiety and ask them if they could be supportive. Every professor I know absolutely does what’s in their power to help students who ask... but if it’s not brought to our attention then we aren’t going to assume every student is so fragile that the mention of their name will cause severe distress. Right? And online it's not like it's a distraction. It's a video feed switching on. No need to interrupt a lesson to point out to the class of someone's tardiness. Of course we are going to have people talking back in these situations. It's unnecessary and in no way enhances a class.
