You are late and people noticed: big deal. Be on time next time, maybe apologize, and get on with the class. Adults shouldn't be upset by “Hello, (student name)! Thanks for joining us.” As the professor of a large undergrad class during the switch to remote last semester... people popping into zoom late during a lecture is distracting and can throw one off balance in the middle of a lecture, especially if their Mike is on and it comes with a bunch of static and background noise. If you do that, a teacher mentioning it is not something that an adult (this is college... highschool freshman I am more likely to lean towards your point of view) should be upset about... and if they are, then it should be a reminder that it’s disruptive to everyone, the instructor included.It also depends on how late... first 5 minutes, sure, no big deal, but more than ten minutes... totally justified.
